More Adventures in Foam Rolling and Yoga

March 17, 2011

Today, I was up by 8, full of oatmeal by 8:30, and out the door for yoga with my mom by 8:50.  The oatmeal was a bit of a fail… I tried to cook Mother’s Rolled Oats in the microwave rather than the stovetop (mostly because I was foggy-headed and had woken up a bit later than planned) and so It wound up dripping down the side of the bowl.  After cleaning up the mess, I added maple syrup, natural peanut butter, shredded coconut, and cranberries to the soupy mess.  The oats tasted good, but I think I put on a few too many toppings in an effort to make up for their undercooked-ness.

I accompanied my mom to her weekly yoga class in town today (I’m home on spring break!) and it was lots of fun.  We walked there and back, and the class was an hour long.  Not too intense, but not too easy either.  Once we got home, we ate an early lunch (big salads with cheese and tomato, bread dipped in olive oil) and I did a writing exercise from The 3 a.m. Epiphany by Brian Kiteley.  My current writing teacher strongly recommended it and so I thought I’d give it a try!  I did the first exercise in the book, called “The Reluctant I.”  I had to write a story in the first person, all while only using first person pronouns twice.  It was a challenge, but a fun one!

Tonight, after a St. Patty’s Day dinner at my grandparent’s house (ravioli rather than corn beef…), my mom and I had more foam roller fun in the living room.  We discovered the true pain of pressure applied to the IT band.  It was an adventure in pain threshold, that’s for sure!  I definitely plan on sticking with foam rolling though, it hurts, but now that I’ve realized how tense I am there’s no turning back until I relieve some of that tension.  Think of how flexible and zen I could be without knots!  Now I’m off to sleep.  I’m probably the only college student who is regularly in bed before midnight on vacations.
